Now, when you set a password for a Notebook (via the File menu), all pages are automatically encrypted. Until recently, you would have to specify encryption for each Notebook page for which you wanted that level of security.

The User Guide still reflects the old method and we will be updating that to reflect the new method of encryption.

Note that file attachments do not get encrypted. For that you would need to use any encryption found within the attachment’s native application or use an third party encryption method prior to attaching it to NoteBook.

Hello, how is it possible in mac version 3.1 to encrypt a page (or several pages) of a notebook? I find this option in the user manual but not in the menu of the program.

Thanks!

You may have discovered this by now, but some NB users within the scientific research and development community have posted on the forum requesting the “hard date” feature. I believe your interests are aligned, as many of them want to be able to use their CP notebooks in connection with documenting patents/inventions. Probably want to chime in your support for the feature on their posts, to keep the issue in front of CP developers.

Not sure that this is the right place to post this but it is something our legal team has issues with Notebook. I was wondering if this affects your practice. I work for Nike Golf and of course we get into a lot of early IP that when using Microsoft One Note there is a hard date that cannot be changed. Not so with Notebook. Is this an issue with your practice and would you like to see this changed/added?

I also eagerly await an iPhone version of Notebook, with Evernote-like syncing and would be willing to pay good money for it. There are some perfectly adequate iPhone outliners out there – Joutliner and CarbonFin are both fine for my purposes, which are mainly of a mobile to-do list nature. If they had a nice companion desktop app and mobile sync I’d be happy with either one, but they don’t. I don’t need a lot of fancy structures, attachment capabilities, styles, etc. (I do that stuff on my desktop in Notebook but don’t need it in the phone necessarily), just a barebones outliner with a simple, intuitive interface that shows as much info as possible on the little LCD.

I love Evernote’s transparent syncing, however it is hopeless as a mobile to-do list – you can’t reorder notes, navigating between categories takes way too many UI actions, and there’s so much screen clutter that you can only see like 4 items onscreen at once. CarbonFin’s non-iPhone interface is web-based and ugly – I want a nice desktop app like Notebook. Joutliner’s desktop app is a joke and syncing is via wired connection only. An iPad version of Notebook might be nice, but an iPhone app is MUCH more important – I always have my phone with me, and that’s not true of my iPad.

I wrote to Evernote about its shortcomings as a mobile to-do list and their response was “that’s not what it’s for – use Egretlist or ElegantNote” (or something like that). Both of the programs they suggested use Evernote syncing but are horribly cluttered and overly-complicated. Evernote could be made useful with just a few tweaks but they’re more interested in providing the cloud services than apps.

+1 vote! Anymore, this is a must.

Evernote and Dropbox both have iOS apps, why not Notebook? I have found I don’t use Notebook as much as previously, because there is no iPhone app. Not having it would make me hesitant to buy future v4.0

For people who (like me) only need a read-only version of their notebooks: exporting as a web site does not mean you must access them online. Just copy the web site files to your smartphone (or laptop), and you can access them without an internet connection.

I must admit that my enthusiasm for a device like an iPad is directly linked to the availability of something like Notebook for it.

Notebook is great – but Laptops are not always the most convenient form factor when you want to quickly reference information that you have. If there was a poll on it I would definately vote for a iPad/phone version….

I might sound skeptical, but have been following this forum for the last 5-6 months, and I think there wont be an iphone app nor ipad app.

By following the forum.. I mean following the updates on the application in the form of announcements, updates, etc. NoteBook 3.0 released in September 2008, I am glad that there is consistent bug fix and I was very hopeful of iphone app & a web integration (automatic import and export) as well as further features research. Unfortunately, I dont feel that way anymore.

Please do not get me wrong, I LOVE NoteBook and probably it is this too much love that’s resulting in high expectation.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Am I mistaken in my conclusion ?

Another thought, in addition to using cell linking to link from an outline page that could act as a table of contents, each item with a link to an exhibit or code page, you could also just put sticky flags with the name of the item on the page you’re interested in accessing quickly.

Depends:
If you add a file or link to it, no. You’d have to annotate in Notebook the page you want to review and use Preview to skip to that page (in Preview you can add to the toolbar a page field where you can type the page you want to be taken to).

If you insert for annotation, yes. This is probably what you’ll want to do. When you drag a PDF into Notebook, you get an option to add for annotation. Every page of the PDF is added into notebook as it’s own page in notebook. You could link directly to that page in notebook, and even annotate on it. You can, anywhere on those annotated pages, right click the image and choose to open/view the source file in Preview also (it embeds the file, then spans the pages in Notebook).

Also, check out MarketCircle’s Daylite and Billings. They may be of interest to you for practice management. Very affordable ($180 and $40 for single user licenses). The Billings integration needs a tad more work, but I got both for a legal clinic I’m doing in law school and am happy with the purchase.

I’d really like to see Notebook integrate with Daylite (cross referencing – so a task would link to notes on it in Notebook or something), but that’s asking for a lot from one of the developers.
