creating collapsable, hierarchical items on the contents tabby Steven L. Hubert - 07:11PM, Nov 11, 2007 |

For frame of reference, I am using the Trial Notebook template. Under the collapsible item called “Prosecution Witnesses” I inserted a page for a particular witness. I want to create a separate page for each topic pertaining to that (or any other) witness. The problem is that when there is a larger number of witnesses, all witness’ initial pages can total up to a large number. When you add in the separate topic pages for each witness, it becomes a little unruly. What are the solutions? I can’t seem to figure out how to paste a graphics file that I captured to show what I was trying to do, so please take a look at the trial notebook template for reference. |

Here are a couple of ideas. You haven't indicated why you want a separate page for each topic. If that's not absolutely necessary for your scheme, consider an outline page for each witness, where each topic can be a subsidiary cell ("child" in Notebook speak) that can be hidden. Your witness page could then have a list of topics by heading, each of which could have questions, info, or graphics that could be hidden or revealed as necessary. If you do need to have separate pages for each topic, you can link pages within a Notebook. So Topic A for Witness 1 would have a link to a Topic A page somewhere else in the back of the Notebook. That way it doesn't have to be a subsidiary page cluttering up your Witness divider. Or you could insert a copy or a link (alias) to a non-Notebook document, like a Word file, elsewhere in your system. Whatever you decide to do, let us know how the system is working for you.

I wish there was some way to communicate using png files so I could be more clear and understand you better. Here goes: It is best to have a separate page for each topic because each topic is a separate subject of cross examination and I want to avoid confusion. Aside from keeping this data on a MacBook, I want to print it out as well for team members and I worry that making these separate topics on the same page will lead to printing problems later. To describe what I want to do: Let's say I am dealing with an identification by a witness of a perpetrator, and one factor is height. I want to collect all the statments made by the witness pertaining to height on that witness' "height" topic page. Btw, I must also create columns for the 'fact' cited (eg 6'3"), where in the discovery I found the information, the date the statement was given and the person to whom it was given. As trial is approaching, I need your input asap.

In a previous version of NoteBook, I was able to tab to make one page a child of another page on the Contents tab. Then I was able to click the triangle next to the parent title to collapse the subpages. I really miss this feature. Is there any way of doing something like it? Can I reformat my Contents page so that it is in Outline format? I think this is what Steven is looking for. Thanks for your help!

SVogt, this behavior has not changed from previous versions. If you are on the Contents page, you cannot make a page a child of another page. The Contents page (as well as Divider pages) work similarly to Note pages, but really are quite different. They are primarily for organizing pages, where Note pages are used for organizing content. If you want to create a hierarchy of pages on the Contents page, you can add Divider pages to do this. A Divider page can be a child of another Divider page. This is likely what you are recalling. ---
