I’m an academic and I’ve been using Notebook to organize my research for a while now. I just started using Zotero to build a citation database, and I, too, would love to see a way to integrate the two.

I would also like to see the ability to add recordings and to add place markers in Notebook. For that matter, I would like to be able to add additional place markers to a voice annotation after it’s recorded with Notebook.

With the Newly released iPad, I am hoping to see a version of Notebook for the iPad, which could offer different keyboards for entering in data like formulas and equations (for math class etc) or a mode where you can draw diagrams or write equations with math symbols just with your finger.

That would be fantastic!

Wow, thanks!
I’m going to be student teaching next January, and hopefully hired as a teacher after that… And I’m new to Notebook, I am using it to organize my notes about classes. So I really appreciate your ideas about using this to do lesson plans and stuff.

Hey all, I am having some troubles with voice annotations in NoteBook.

I took the powerpoint provided by my instructor and converted it to a PDF. I then put the PDF into NoteBook. Cool. I now have about 50 pages that I can annotate during the lecture. At the beginning of my lecture, I clicked on the voice annotation to record the professor and made typed annotations to the slides as the instructor went over them. Now I have the slides provided by my instructor with annotations. But then I went to review the audio and I have no idea how to do so.

Normally, when I am working with an outline that has voice annotations I can click on the icon on the left hand of the page and listen to the lecture at the moment that I typed the information. With an imported PDF it appears as though I cannot listen to a voice annotation, correct? If not, then this is a seriously overlooked feature. I attached a picture to show what I mean.

Thanks in advance for any feedback anyone has out there.

I forgot to add that you can have as many tabs as you’d like. Personally I prefer to keep several separate notebooks rather than one massive notebook, but that’s just my taste.

You can indeed sync notebooks across several computers. I keep my notebooks in my Dropbox (www.dropbox.com – you can get a free account there) along with all my other documents. Just remember not to have the same notebook open on both your machines at the same time, as the file may get corrupted!

Yes, you can indeed use NoteBook for this purpose. I am doing a PhD myself (musicology), but I use NoteBook more for meeting notes, project management, notes on musical works and the like.

My ideas and writings go straight into Scrivener, as I use this application for drafting my thesis. Reading notes are handled by Sente, as I like to keep my reading notes together with the citations in my reference manager.

Hope this makes any sense. If you’d like to hear more about my workflow, please let me know, and I’ll elaborate!

I’ve just started a PhD in the field of Criminal Justice in the UK. I’m currently in the exploratory field so I’m reading a ton of materials and making copius amounts of notes. I seem to be going through notebooks like no tomorrow!

Am I correct in assuming that Notebooks would be useful for the collecting all my ideas, thoughts and notes. Is there a limit on how many tabs you can have?

Also, if I notebooks installed to my iMac and my Macbook, is there any way to sync them so they are identical?

Sorry for the newbie questions.

Any researchers out there familiar with the free Firefox extension called Zotero? It helps you collect, manage, and cite your research sources, like an Endnote on steroids that lives in your browser.

http://www.zotero.org/

Anyway, I’m wondering if anyone has thought of any ways to integrate Zotero and Notebook—I’m thinking particularly of annotated bibliographies and the like.

For that matter, is anyone out there using Notebook for notating PhD exam readings or other long lists of notes on books? Do you use citation software as well? If so, do you integrate the two?

Thanks,
Mack

I hope that a future version of Notebook will allow dragging in and notating recordings. Microsoft OneNote has long had this functionality and it is fantastic. Also, I think think the splitting of the audio file is unnecessary—OneNote simply places markers within the file so that when you click on your written notes you can listen to the specific section of audio that you notated.

One workaround is that you can use a mini (1/8 inch) cable from the output of your recorder to the input of your Mac, then change your audio input from mic to line in. Play back the recording while recording into Notebook and take notes in real time. It’s not ideal, but it will work.

Good luck!

I reply to myself. Probably, when the first draft (or the whole work) is to be done in NoteBook, it is better to consider writing the outline in the Divider page, that will become the table of content of the final essay.

This would actually create the pages where one will be writing. Any extensive note to an item would be entered directly into the writing page, thus making the outline lighter and cleaner than my usual mix of headings/inline notes.

Shame is you cannot actually copy (or export) the outline from a Divider page, and paste it to a word processor for exporting just an outline to be discussed separately from the text.

The best I can do, now, is to export a whole section as RTF, open it with a wordprocessor and delete everything in the middle of the outline items. With Nisus Writer this is easy, since you can use the Ruler > Select All function to select only lower-level paragraphs and delete them.

Hi,

Since my next public speech at the university will contain a lot of multimedia files, I decided to use NoteBook as a blackboard (well, white actually), and do my presentation with a “local” web site generated by NB.

So, with the help of the many examples in CP’s own web site and in this forum, I decided to write my essay entirely in NB, bypassing my usual other apps like Scrivener or Nisus Writer.

I started, as usual, by collecting notes from the web in various Note pages; transcribing lessons and annotating books and essays with Cornell note pages; and, finally, slowly creating an outline of my essay in a Note page.

When I had to convert my outline to a set of Writing pages and Dividers, I discovered I had to do it line by line and page by page, since there is no apparent way to (semi-)automatically convert an outline page to a set of pages reflecting the same nested structure of an outline. This would have been very sought-after in this situation.

How do others do this kind of things?

Hi,

I usually record lessons with a recorder, instead of carrying a laptop with me. This means I’m leaving home one of the best features of NoteBook – the ability of recording speakers, and splitting their recording on the go.

Is there any chance this function could be also added to imported audio files? Put them to play, and split the audio file each time you create a new outline item. Shouldn’t be too difficult with uncompressed Aiff and Wave files.

Hi Jayson,

This is the first time I’ve commented on the forum. I’ve had an excellent experience with Notebook for the past two semesters taking notes at Law School and as an organizer. Thanks for such an excellent product!

The voice annotation feature has been a great, with one exception – the playback quality. I have a Macbook pro, and I have tried a few different external USB mics in addition to the built in mic. When I’ve used these mics with other programs (for example the Notebook Layout in Word 2008) the sound has been significantly better. I think this is because these programs have the option to change the quality of the recording (sample size, rate etc).

I have looked for such an option on Notebook, but I haven’t found one. Am I missing something?

I believe that Circus Ponies’ Notebook is significantly better than the Notebook Layout view in Word 2008 in many ways, but adding the ability to increase the sound quality for voice annotation would be a HUGE help for people like me, and yet another reason to continue going strong with Notebook. Please let me know if anything to this end is available or in the works for Notebook.

Thanks,
Nawaz
