I teach 4th grade. This will be my first year using Notebook for me lesson plans. In one tab, I'll have a weekly 'snapshot' of the plans, then, if needed, I'll have a section for more detail as far as which files I'll need for a specific lesson. Don't know how it will work out yet--will find out Monday! Smile I'll try to let you know! Lisa

I used Notebook extensively last year, and am hoping version 3.0 arrives before school starts next week.

I kept a Class Data Notebook, with a section for whole class data, and other sections for individual data.

The breakdown was like this:

(Divider Tab) Class Overview
-- (page) Brief Synopsis
-- (page) Data Analysis
-- (page) To Dos

(Divider Tab) Content Areas
-- (page)Reading
-- (page)Writing
-- (page)Math
-- (page)Social Studies
-- (page)Science

(Divider Tab)Students
- (subheading)Student Name
-- (page)Student Profile
-- (page)Data Analysis
-- (page)Conferences
-- (page)Anecdotal Report

In the Class Overview section, I described the general makeup of the class. (I find that you are often asked for pieces of this information, and it's nice to have it at your fingertips.) This includes how many students, how many boys vs girls, special education students, ELLs, students receiving counseling, etc. I also attach pdfs of the whole-class data I receive (class test summaries, etc.).

For the Content Area section, I tried to summarize the pacing calendar for each subject, basically monthly topics. This was the section least used, because I had the data in other places.

The Student section was by far the most utilized. I had a page where I described the student in narrative form. I tried to give a well-rounded picture, including any personal information that might affect achievement, positively or negatively. The student data was also linked - I keep track of grades in Mac's Numbers program, and have a report card summary that I pasted in from there. Standardized test data was also linked in (I save them in pdf form.) The balanced literacy program we were doing last year called for conference logs -- I had a page for them. Anecdotals had a separate page. (Each incident was dated with its own bullet; follow-ups were sub-bulleted under the incident with the words "action taken." This way, I had a record not only of the incidents, but of what I did to address it.)

I found this program worked well for me. Particularly beneficial was the ability to print the information for a student when needed. (Having a complete file on a student saves a lot of time when an administrator is calling in the middle of a lesson looking for it!)

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply guys! Given that the school year is about to begin I probably wont get many more. Good luck this year!

Wow! Gr5teach! I love your overview of the NB. Question: on the Student page--did each student get their own page/profile? I intend to study your post some more, and see what sort of good ideas stem from it.

So far, I have used my NB for snaopshot of lesson plans. We have to write in a binder-curriculum map (I'm a 4th grade teacher), but I like to have a snapshot's glance at what I'm dong that day. I've also found it handy, that if I have an electronic copy of a worksheet/activity guide; I attach it to that day. This keeps me from trying to remember where I stored that file--usually buried at the bottom of my "HD heap"

I am really interested in your student section. Looking forward to hearing from you and other teachers who use NB!

Thanks, glbrookins! Yes, each student does get their own set of pages. They each have their own divider page, which I drag an Address Book contact to. Then, under each student, there are four pages (see post above). Sorry I didn't make that clear the first time -- I was typing quickly.

I keep the Contents card displayed on the left (under View...Contents Card), so I can click on each student easily.

As far as the Address book, I keep two directories for students in it: Students - Current and Students - Former (I label them like that so they stay together alphabetically in my directory list). Then, for each student, I enter emergency contact information. I use the company label for the class they are in, so this year, all the kids are "2008-2009 5-304." This way, once the year is over, and I drag them into the "Students - Former" directory, I will be able to sort them by class.

I drag each address book icon (one for each student) onto their divider page listing right on the Contents page. It adds a sticker for the card right to it, and when you click on the sticker, you have access to the student's contact info right there. So, all the information is right at your fingertips if, say, you are entering anecdotal information that you need to follow up with a phone call to the parents.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my lesson plans. It seems like every year I try something new. I thought I would try iCal, but am still fiddling with how to make it most efficient. I wanted to make a separate calendar for each subject, which could then be printed or published online, but hesitate, because I imagine it would involve a lot of re-typing the following year. Then I thought maybe Numbers was the answer. I'm even contemplating Bento, although was unable to find a real use for the program when I tried the trial version... thought maybe it would work as a gradebook, too.

For grades, now, I use Numbers, which makes for very pretty and professional-looking portfolios.

But I really can't wait to see the new version of Notebook, because if it can do all of this, it would be perfect!

Thanks for all these great ideas.

I’m using NB extensively for lesson planning and term planning.
I have one page for each class I teach, in this the top level marks the main sections of the term (periods between the holidays), the next level marks the weeks per section and the next one down the actual lessons per week.

In the week, I use typography to distinguis the date and headline of a lesson, the times during the lesson and what I’ve planned.

I drag in files of worksheets if I have any and link to other NB pages where I sometimes create the drawings etc. for the blackboard.

For the actual lesson, I hoist one lesson cell and print it.

Here are some screenshots:

Wow, thanks!
I’m going to be student teaching next January, and hopefully hired as a teacher after that… And I’m new to Notebook, I am using it to organize my notes about classes. So I really appreciate your ideas about using this to do lesson plans and stuff.

Thank you! keep the ideas coming please.
