I absolutely love notebook, but in recent days I have started to explore other options. I won’t say what they are, but if there is going to be no option for the ipad from circus ponies, I am sadly going to have to be moving on… I have several friends I have discussed this with and their feelings are a mirror of my own.

How hard can it be… anybody who could make this GREAT product is capable of doing a wonderful job on a similar one for other devices.

Sadly, without some announcement soon, I’ll be moving all my Notebooks to some other software solution.

Please, Circus Ponies… give us a word!

Sure, me too. I wonder why they don’t say anything about the progress. Can’t really understand why announcing in advance should be disadvantage. I know they’re going to make this thing happen. But why let us wait for announcing. Confused, disappointed, and upset much!

Just wanted to add a “me too” to this thread. I use Notebook for my lab notebook and would be great to have it on the iPad, rather than my laptop, to use at the bench.

How about the NEST TABLE function?
Anyone mastered this?

I was expecting to be able to subordinate a table within a table,
in order to have a header category within a table.

You are getting copy & paste to work?
That seems to yield an uneditable tiff file.

Are there any plans to make a Notebook app for the iPad? I’m not surprised we never got an iPhone app—the iPhone screen is just too small for displaying and working with Notebooks—but it seems like Notebook could be amazing on the iPad. I already use it on my laptop for all my curriculum and lesson planning and I can think of so many ways to expand my usage in my teaching and home life if I had it on the iPad.

Clipping and Placement on Page (by Noreen)

I love the clipping ability, but am having some trouble with the placement of the clip. When I select the option to clip it to the page I want, the entire item clipped is pasted at the top of the page.

Do I have to manually insert the curser on the spot where I want the clip, then clip?

Good to hear! From all the syncing applications that we hear about from our customers, DropBox seems to work pretty well with NoteBook, which also uses file packages like Numbers and Pages.

If it didn’t, these forums would be the place you’d hear about it! :-)

The fix you sent seems to be working perfectly. Thanks. One of the great things about Dropbox is that, unlike SugarSync, it handles packages, such as Numbers or Pages.

I noticed that Voice Annotation files open in iTunes as QT.mov files. Is there some way to change the default recording file format to MP3 in order to reduce the size of associated NB files? How?

Hi Don,

Please send a message to support here and we can get you a fix for the .moddates issue you are seeing. The fix will be included in the next update to NoteBook as well.

I agree that’s not a smooth workflow. Syncing is a very complicated activity and it’s made more complex when working with file packages (which is what a Notebook file is). We’ve seen data loss before that has likely resulted from some third party syncing software.

The ability to sync a Notebook is on NoteBook’s possible future features list, by the way.

This problem just started for me yesterday and is unbelievably annoying. It’s happening with a notebook I’ve had on Dropbox for months with no problems until now.
Eric, with all due respect, I don’t think zipping the notebook, then expanding it at the other computer, rezipping again, etc is anyone’s idea of a good workflow.
All I want is my notebook to work the way it did 2 days ago. I’m baffled as to why it would change.
p.s. In the course of typing this, I’ve had about 15 Growl messages pop up in the periphery of my vision.

Newby Questions about Shapes, Format & Styles (by iGregor)

I’m a new user with several questions about Shapes, Formats & Styles.

(1) Can shapes be grouped so that a diagram created with various shapes can be grouped and moved as a single unit (as in the Illustration in LectureNotes.jpg below)? How?

(2) Can a note page be formatted so that notes appear to follow a shape illustration? I seem unable to format notes/bullets so that they appear lower on the page (eg., in LectureNotes.jpg below, the Illustration is supposed to appear between bullets 3 & 4, but, instead lands on top of bullet 4). Is there some way to set a gap between note entries into which a shape illustration is inserted? How?

(3) How can a note bullet entry style (ruler indent and tab settings) be set as the default for all note entries on all note pages? I’m able to set the style (ruler indent and tab settings) for a given page (desired format in LectureNotes.jpg below), but new pages seem to revert to original (default?) settings. How to make NB format stick to the style settings I want?

Is there a way to change some default settings for notebooks, specifically, bullet options and handle options? Every time I make a new page in a notebook, I need to setup my custom bullet options. I’d like to be able to have every page start with the options I keep having to customize.

Cut + paste is easiest, or you can drag to desired page in contents card.

You probably can’t get it to work with tabs since those are dividers, you can’t have outline cells in the divider, just outline or writing pages. Make sure you aren’t trying to drag to divider tabs.

I’m a new user in need of several key features that appear to be missing from NB, or are well-hidden. If missing, then request that CP add to the NB wish list. If well-hidden, then request someone show me where I can find them.

(1) I need a way to sync NB files between a desktop and laptop simply and automatically—without the manual work-arounds (locate NB file, compress it, send to MobileMe or DropBox or whatever) described in the forums.

(2) I’d like a way to backup NB files to an alternative drive automatically on quit.

(3) I’d like to be able to use Outline features (bullets, children, etc.) on Cornell Note pages, and track Voice Annotations to each entry in the Outline.

(4) I anticipate that I will soon like to be able to sync to iPad…

creating an index of song titles (by carol)

I have a notebook of about 200 pages with lists of songs and music titles sorted on various parameters. I’d like an index that lists each song title and links to all its occurrences. One solution that comes to mind is setting a preference that all titles within quotations be indexed together as chunks rather than by their individual words. Can this be done now or is it a possible feature that could be added in the future? thanks.

Customizing a Cover Page (by Strum Stephen)

I am unsure about how much I can customize the Cover. I selected background image from my photo collection & then selected Scale. That was nice since it gave me a visually beautiful cover with some great colors.

I am not sure about the Label feature within the Page Inspector when working on the Cover page and what it is intended to accomplish. I cannot customize the size of the box but of course can select the default image of a pony or select my own graphic file. If I check to see what the Cover page looks like in Print Preview I do not see any of the graphic changes made to the Cover.

I then used Shapes to create some rectangles with text to give a title to the Cover page and some nice fill. I could do something similar with a Text Note but not as easily as with Shapes. The Cover Page as I have formatted it is attached.

On print preview this does appear in its entirety but it is cut off. Screenshot of this is attached. Everything else in Print Preview is fine but not so for the Cover page. I could not find any detailed discussion about customizing the cover page in the manual or on the Forums after finding 46 references to Cover but none that dealt with my issues. Help would again be appreciated. Support has been excellent from Circus Ponies. I am not sure I could attache more than one file so just in case I am just showing the cover as I would like it to be.

Glad you like NoteBook!

For #1, you could keep the typeface a Arial 12 and use the Zoom controls to view the page at 150%. The Zoom command is in the View menu and you can also access if you display the Navigation Bar (also accessible via the View menu).

As for number #2, I just responded to your support request regarding that, but for the benefit of others: click the inverted blue triangle in the upper right of the Print dialog to reveal the full dialog’s options.

OK, this is actually happening on every page in this particular notebook. Very disturbing as this book contains a semester’s worth of notes.
