Edit the Keywords List?

Edit the Keywords List?

by rich - 11:51AM, Oct 30, 2008

Hello all,

I was wondering if there was a way to edit the Keywords list, to import my own, or to edit them easily in one editing session? It seems a little cumbersome to have to add/delete them one at a time at the Keyword inspector…

Thanks, R

rich,
Check the Help file section: Adding a Keyword to a Cell.

In short, with View\Keywords turned-on, double-click the keyword column where you want to add text. Select the keyword from the drop-down menu or type whatever you want as a Keyword then, click off of the cell to save.

It is a very handy feature!

Thanks t-rex, that is handy. But my question, I guess, has more to do with the actual manipulation of the Keywords themselves. Is there a place where I can see a list of them and add my own or delete them directly (like in TextEdit, or something else), or even import a batch of them?

Thanks, Rich

rich,
After some thinking and searching I think what you want to do is edit your notebook file’s Spotlight metadata. If you right (Ctrl) click your notebook in Finder and select Get Info, you can view the Keywords.

Of course, this data cannot be edited through Get Info but perhaps it might be editable through a third party editor. Of course, unless you really know what you’re doing (as I do not) you should not attempt to edit data outside of its native app.

Good luck!

I agree that the feature/capability that Rich is referring to is an important one! For instance, if I mistype a keyword and then want to delete it from the list (and Notebook’s ‘memory’ in charge of the auto-type feature – also somewhat annoying), I can’t do that because there is no master list to access. Or if I want to re-name or consolidate keywords, I can’t do that either.

Thanks,
Christine

I will send the suggestion to the development team to allow the importing of keywords. If you need to change or delete certain keywords, you can accomplish this from the Keywords and Stickers Inspector.

Actually Travis (and this is my first post from a new user.. LOVE the product)... though you can use the inspector to look at the list of Keywords and the hit the REMOVE button to remove one that, for example you typed incorrectly (in my case, I have one called “sense” and one “senses”... I DO NOT want to keep the sense one)I cannot find a way to remove the one that I misspelled (“sense”) from the keyword entry field widget (view—>keywords). When I remove “sense” as a Keyword via the Inspector, it still shows up in the drop down menu (keyword entry field).

This may seem like a nit, but I’m trying to consolidate keywords, and I’ve already had several instances when I used the keyword entry field (drop down) to select a keyword for a cell, and ended up selecting one that I wanted to go away.

Is there a way for me to make this adjustment that I cannot figure out?

Many thanks.

I know how to remove Keywords, EXCEPT I can’t remove the Keywords listed in the Notebook section, such as URGENT and WEB. At the least I’d like to NOT see them in the drop-down list. How do I remove this particular set of Keywords or at least make them invisible?

Has there been any progress in the ability to access or edit a “Master Keyword List”. This would be very useful. Had I known that this did not exist I would have been much more thoughtful about how I used the keyword function.

Well if you have a property list editor that handles binary plist files, you can do the following. Ensure that you quit Notebook. Go to ~/Library/Preferences and open the com.CIrcusPonies.NoteBook.plist file under Root → Custom you have all your custom keywords.

Note: Normally you should NEVER tamper with the plist files directly as this can inflict strange behavior in the program, but I tried to add and remove several keywords and they do show up / disappear in the keyword pane of the inspector. Now you have been warned, so don’t blame me if you mess up your NoteBooks.

Note 2: If you remove any keywords from the custom list they still show up in the NoteBook. I.e. if I have a keyword name “MyKey” attached to a cell and then remove the keyword from the list, “MyKey” still shows up as attached to the cell. So you have to manually remove the keywords from the cells.
