What does the Outline menu, New Table command do?

by Clarkey - 07:39PM, Mar 17, 2010

Hi, I’m experimenting with tables in Notebook. I’ve found the inline table feature for creating a table within a cell but can anyone explain what this menu item Is supposed to do – maybe create A tabular set of multiple outline areas on a page?

I can’t find any references to it in the help system or here – nor can I find a situation where it isn’t greyed-out?
Thanks
Keith..

I’m not sure what your question is exactly. It does just what you’d expect, create a table inside a cell. With a cursor blinking in a cell (not just with the cell highlighted), select inline table and use the inspector to format as desired.

That dimmed command is a placeholder for the native NoteBook tables that will be released soon (a free update to NoteBook 3.0). These are currently in the latter stages of beta testing.

Has this feature been implemented yet?

It’s not yet publicly available, but still is in beta testing. The release has been delayed in part due to the development of the iPad version of NoteBook. If you are interested in testing the new native NoteBook tables, please contact Technical Support here.

I noticed that the current download (v460) has something of a native tables feature, but seems incomplete. There seems to be minimal functional programming (I don’t know if there is any beyond simply basic math expressions).

Overall it seems shoddy (except the look). It is awkward and non-intuitive (and not as easy as it should be) to add columns. Adding rows and switching between columns is fine. But there is no ability to ‘drag’ from one cell to the next – essentially basic (in the sense of core or essential) operations that are implemented in most outside programs (ie. excel, Google Spreadsheet). Furthermore, equation editing requires one to type out cells (rather than select by click), does not seem to support ranges, and does not seem to give an indication of what – if any – functions are supported.

I realize that the feature is still being worked on – I am simply making clear my expectations and my current attitude. I am confident that with further development, this will be a great addition to an already phenomenal product.

The inline table feature was there well before v460.

Noah,

You seem to be looking at the Table feature of NoteBook and expecting a spreadsheet rather than a table. If NoteBook has any calculation features at all in its tables, then that is just an extra feature beyond tables.
