Creating a Dictionary or glossary in NBby midconjoe - 11:21PM, Jul 08, 2010 |

Greetings all. First post ever. I’m stumped. I am in the process of doing a significant revision and update to a dictionary. I am doing it all in NB. Each dictionary term is a new page. Definition and text about the dictionary term is in cells often with many sub-cells. So far so good in NB. Now I find it will be best to export everything to a table (Excel or a FileMaker database?) in which each record consists of the dictionary term as one field, the entire collection of definition cells and sub-cells and another field, and then several other fields – including bibliographic info, additional recommended sources, etc.etc. There are some translations of this dictionary also into other languages, which makes the use of a database (or more accurately a series of linked databases in the different languages) necessary. The question is: how to export the entire NB file (many hundreds of terms) such that it will arrive in text as tab-delimited fields (the dictionary term and the complete definition consisting of many cells and sub-cells) that can then be imported into Excel or a database manager. I think this is not directly possible, and sadly conclude that I may have to export to RTF, and then use something like TextWrangler to format the text in such a way that it will THEN be a simple task to import into Excel or Database manager. If anyone has a suggestion, please advise. |
