I purchased Notebook solely to outline my book. I haven't had time to learn that much about it. Consequently, I am having trouble. First of all, is there a way to print certain pages. I have a document for chapter 3 and the pages in Notebook are labelled 3-1 through 3-8. Sometimes I just want to print one or two pages, not the whole document. Second, I am using Word, but I have read in the Posts about Mellel. Why is that better. I am concerned about learning something new at a critical time. If you have any suggestions for a friendlier outliner or word processer, please inform me.

Printing: In the print dialogue, you should see options for choosing a range of pages to print, just as with other applications. Your problem might be that you don't know the numbers of the pages you want to print. If that's the case go to the contents page before you choose print. As long as the section from which you want to print is expanded, you can see the page numbers. Word & Mellel: I think you'll get wildly varying answers. I have several bad memories from over the years of losing large chunks of work when Word crashed. And I've had some bad experiences just this last week on a smaller scale with Word X. But it could be the age of my version that's causing the problems. I've heard good reports of Word 2004. I know a lot of people who think Mellel is much better, and I tend to agree. However, it's not the easiest thing in the world to learn. My feeling is that, if you're using Word now and are not having major problems, you should stick with it for now. Once you've finished your book, you might like to try Mellel out. Alternatively, you could give it a quick try now and see how easy it would be to get used to. I think a new copy of Mellel is cheaper than a Word upgrade, so it could save you money in the long run.

For Word help (including a good explanation of how even Word's outlining view can help a writer): http://www.mvps.org The MVPS group is independent of Microsoft and gives honest advice about the software. The articles on how to deal with the inevitable corruption of Word documents (and how to minimize it) are invaluable.
