dayBook 2011 (8th Edition) — A Digital (GTD) Diary

by petert - 09:20AM, Dec 30, 2010

Hi NoteBookers.

The 2011 (8th Edition) of my ‘new and improved’ dayBook Template is now available for download. To obtain the link to download a copy please either email me at:

petert89#gmail.com [substitute @ for #] with

‘dayBook_2011-8th_Edition’

as the subject (without the quotes).

This is the fastest way, all emails sent to this address are forwarded to my MacBook, iPhone and iPad so I will see it in a timely mannner.

OR

Leave a message in this thread, which I will get a notification of – PLEASE remember to include your email address, either directly in the request [preferable] or at least in your profile.

IMPORTANT: No email address – no template.

The 2011 template was built using the latest releases (as at Dec 2010) of Circusponies Notebook Application – Mac (ie., Release 3.0 (v3AA445-7)) and setup / formatted to work well when used on a Mac or with the new CP NoteBook iOS application on an iPad.

I had to make a choice here, to be iOS compatible or not by using the latest version to build the template. As it was built with the latest version(s) of the CP NoteBook App this template will not open correctly under earlier versions of NoteBook under MacOS.

============

NB1: Although most emails are replied to within just a few hours please allow 24-36 hours before you think you might have been missed as sometimes I have to (pretend) to work so I get paid each month.

I do however ask that you keep the URL to yourself – one of the rewards I get from distributing the template is knowing with a reasonable amount of certainty how many copies have been distributed.

Trivia: For 2011 I successfully sent the link to 918 requestees

NB2: Some replies have bounced – see note at end of this spiel

====================================

What is this Template?
It is a NoteBook document set up as you would pretty much expect a ‘Day to a Page’ Diary. The NoteBook has 13 main custom (tab) sections pre-set. One of these custom sections, ‘Notes +’, contains approximately 30 additional (non ‘day’) pages, such as:

  • Intro Notes – - a somewhat extended summary of the Template contents
  • FAQs – - some answers to commonly asked questions on the Template
  • Links – - some useful / suggested URLs (working as at 2009.12.22-Tue AEDT)
  • Software I prefer not to go without
  • Books / Articles of Note I Have Read – 2011
  • Conversion Charts
  • Expenses / Budget Control – 2011
  • Family Days – 2011 – - for birthdays, etc
  • Health / Medical Notes – 2011 – - hopefully this will get little use by anyone
  • Purchase Reminders – Books – 2011
  • Purchase Reminders – Music – 2011
  • Quotations & Thoughts of Worth
  • Sources / Gift Ideas – 2011
  • 2010, 2011 & 2012 Calendars

As well as some of the ‘note’ pages having now including explanatory Sticky Notes a number have starter tables (in native format this year) on them to make their use a bit easier.

2011 Tab
Has two full year calendars for 2011, one with standard month / dates (week starting on a Monday) and the other in Julian Days, i.e., days 1 – 365 for the year. These include week numbers according to ISO 8601.

In addition each date in both calendars comes with Hyperlinks (all 730 of them) set to the related page in the dayBook.

Month Tabs
There are 12 ‘month’ tabs / sections with each containing the following pages (Jan 2011 example):
  • Special Days / Events / Notes – Jan 2011
  • 2011.01.01-Sat
  • 2011.01.02-Sun
    etc., thru to
  • 2011.01.31-Mon

Do This Tab
This is actually a renamed Tab on the in-built ‘To Do Items Index’ page of the NoteBook.

’Next Action’ items (ie., those cells with a Checkbox) are automatically listed on this page.

============

The Day Pages
In addition to listing the Title of each day page there are a few standard extras on each one. Immedately below the Title listing the date in the form YYYY.MM.DD-ddd there is a Julian Date for that day, followed by a divider, a Next Actions heading and another divider to separate the default items from whatever you might like to add to your dayBook.

Julian Days
In addition to the extra Julian Days Calendars mentioned above (see ‘2011 Tab’ note above) each day page includes a sub-heading, e.g., on page 165, ‘2010.05.01-Sun’, the sub heading reads ‘2011-W17-7 d121-244d’.

The first group of characters (2011-W17-7) indicate that ‘today’ is day 7 (sunday, monday being day 1) of week 17 in 2011. Further, the final group of characters (d121-244d) show that it is day 121 of the year with 244 days remaining in the year.

Clicking the Link Sticker beside this sub-title will return you to the date (day num) on the 2011 Julian Days Calendar. From this point it is relatively easy to add or subtract x days and click on that ‘day number’ to jump to the related day page in the body of the template.

i.e., on the Julian Day Calender add 45 days to ‘121’ arriving at ‘166’, click on ‘166’ and you will travel to page 212 of the dayBook, ‘2011.06.15-Wed’.

Next Actions
Each day page also contains the ‘Next Actions’ section just below the days sub-title. See the ‘Intro Notes’ section in the template on the use of this section.

Failed Sends
EVERY person that sends me an email or requests the d/l URL via this Forum gets a personal reply (attempt) from me without fail. If you don’t hear from me within approx 36 hours then:

  1. I didn’t get your request OR
  2. You didn’t supply an email address OR
  3. My send to you bounced

Don’t bother sending me abusive eMails about how I ignore your continued requests or take hours to respond – I am in a different time zone (the future) to most of my ‘customers’ so am often asleep when you are awake.

A simple follow-up [polite] request [after approx 36 hours] noting that I may have overlooked your initial request will more likely result in my re-attempting to get you the link. I WANT to help you to get my template.

Any and all senders of abusive emails have been and will continue to be instantly and permanently blacklisted without notice by adding the source email to my Spam list so any further abusive emails will be deleted before I even see them.

====================================

Comcast Users:
I am consistently (for 3 plus years) unable to email to ‘comcast’ addresses, please use an alternative if you have one. If you don’t (have an alternative email) I regret I am unable to contact you.

====================================

Special Thanks
To Steve F for the Julian days inclusion suggestion back in 2009. IMO it is the best change / addition to this template in the last few years.
====================================

Word of Warning – UPGRADE to the Current Version of CP NoteBook.app
Please note that the minimum version required for this template is Release 3.0.1 (v3AA450). This or a later version must be installed on your Mac before you open this 2011 template. I suggest that you update to the latest version available here.

Opening it in earlier versions will permanently damage the template.

Have a Great day!

Hi Peter,

I downloaded the template however it is not working properly. I get several errors about “There was a problem locating one or more colors used by this page.” and pages are not displaying properly, cannot see the contents card, etc..

I am running the latest version 3.0 (v370) on my macbook.

Perhaps the download file is corrupted or something simple?

Hmm, I upgraded to the latest Release 3.0 (v3AA447) version and the issues persist.

Hi Meckert,

If you don’t have the original zip file you downloaded then I suggest you re-download.

Opening the template even once with the older version will break it, permanently. You may also need to delete your ~/Library/Preferences/com.circusponies.NoteBook.plist file.

Let me know how it goes.

I am also having problems getting the template to work. I got the message about locating one or more colors, and also it’s been saying that my license is unavailable, even though when I restart my MacBook, I can open Notebook, and one of my own notebooks that I use with no problem. I have downloaded the template two more times, but the problems persist. I even deleted the preferences file as suggested. Additional suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Excellent, Thanks Peter, that did the trick! I removed my plist, and opened a fresh copy and all is well!

Thank you again for an excellent template!!

Hi Francie,

I am sorry for your frustration. From the symptoms you describe I am guessing you have NoteBook 3 v370 or similar currently installed.

To check the version of your currently installed NoteBook Application.

- Open the NoteBook Application

(you don’t need to have a document open, just the application).

- Select the Menu,

NoteBook | About NoteBook…

If my assumption was correct and you have a version that is not the current version, NoteBook 3 v447, then you will need to download the current version of the Application from here to use my 2011 template.

Peter,

Thanks for this great planner outline – flexible enough to work for about anything you need. It reminds me of the 2 pages per day Franklin Covey I used in the late 1990’s with a PDTL on the left page with a daily calendar, and the DRE on the right page. Nice job.

I have moved a copy to my iPad and back using iTunes. Sketching with your finger on the iPad is really nice. I needed to upgrade CPN to 3.0.1 (v3AA450) on my iMac to get the return copy to work but all the changes came through ok after the change. With v3AA447 I would only get an empty notebook and couldn’t do anything with it.

Thank you, Peter. I am new to NoteBook and your daybook turned out to be perfect – especially since my fledgling skills need time and practice to develop. I especially like the calendar and the separate pages for books, ideas, etc. Well thought out and constructed. Thank you!

Hello Peter,

were you planning on providing a 2012 version of your daybook? I’ve used your template now for two years and hope I can continue to use it. I know how much work you put into it and greatly appreciate it.

Hi Rhonni,

yes I am working on a 2012 9th Edition – I am trying to make this one a bit more iOS friendly as the existing one does not work (really) well on my iPad.

I am on schedule for the normal mid-late Dec release date.

If you would like to be notified when it is ready send me an email with ‘DayBook 2012 (9th Edition) – Early Bird Request’ as the subject.

Have a Great day!
