"Project Book" Templateby simon - 09:28AM, May 13, 2004 |
|
Overview This Project Book notebook has been designed to keep track of all aspects of a project in what I hope is a logically arranged format. I originally though about using NoteBook to track my projects in this manner after seeing the screen shots from Office 2004 Entourage’s Project Centre, I thought if they can copy NoteBook in Word’s notebook view then I can try using NoteBook to track my projects. I’ve tried to keep this template quite loose with a general format so as not to be too specific to the way I work, though to be honest this is the kind of layout I like, uncluttered and not overcomplicated. I also didn’t want to involve too many other apps in managing my project via NoteBook, in other words attaching screen shots or clippings from an app which is ideally suited to that form of data. So, say I wanted to use iCal for scheduling then I don’t really want to have to keep grabbing screen shots from it just to copy into this project notebook. If, however, at the end of the project I want to keep a backup of the project schedule then all I need to do is export the project calendar from iCal and attach it to this notebook for future reference. On the Schedule section you will see that I’ve mentioned and allowed for both options. One of the great things about NoteBook is that you can easily adapt it to the way you work. As such I tried to cover all the bases for a project-type notebook with as many general options included, yet not too many to appear so different to the way you like to work. I hope that you will find enough to get the general gist of this template and to allow you to modify it without having to alter too many things. You will find Italic blue text (just like you are reading now) throughout this notebook to explain what the page is for and how best to use it, as well as possible variations you may wish to consider. Italic red text (like this) on some pages are handy tips to consider. Once you get an idea on how to use this template you can of course go ahead and delete them both. So, for each new project simply duplicate this template in the Finder and name it to whatever you like. Alas you cannot flag a notebook document as Stationary thereby letting the Finder duplicate it for you for each new project. Finally, don’t forget that you can password protect this notebook as well as encrypt any page for extra security, if you so desire.Hope you find the template useful.Simon(The above text is taken from the how-to-use-this-template inside the notebook)
Just to restate my goal in designing this template, which I’d been thinking about for some time now, was to make it so it was easy to use with a straightforward layout. By this I mean the last thing I wanted to use was a notebook which required me to perform many steps above and beyond using NoteBook to manage as many aspects of a project as possible. Projects can be tough enough as it is without worrying about an over-complex organisational structure, if you get my drift. Therefore I believe I’ve covered pretty much all the basics in this template. It’s how I like to use it and I hope you find it useful too. Please let me know what you think. I’d be interested in any comments. There are a couple of issues with NoteBook’s HTML export stopping it from displaying all the keywords on a page as well as certian background images. Therefore to get a true idea of this template I recommend you just download it and check it out for yourself.Download URLProject Book |

Note of appreciation to Simon. I downloaded your project book some time ago, and find it reassuring to be able to refer to a comprehensive example, as I evaluate thoroughness of my own projects. Recent loss of a whole folder of NoteBooks was gradually overcome. However, I did miss the copy of your Project Book, and am pleased to find that the availibility--and your generosity--continues. Thank you! Also, the cover illustration adds even more of a nice touch. Thanks again. Ann W. R.

sorry for the basic question but how do I open/view/use this template? ... i am getting nothing except the cover page - i am new to notebook but have not had this issue with other templates (they simply appeared where i could see/access all the tabs/pages, etc.) ... i am eager to begin experimenting with your Project Template. thanks.

FYI, I downloaded the Project Book file (as linked in the first message above). These are the steps I had to take to open the Project Book: 1) Click the URL link in the forum message (http://www.cinemastyle.btinternet.co.uk/NoteBook.app_Notebooks/) 2) Click the file "Project_Book.zip" to download the file. 3) Uncompress the Project_Book.zip file, this should happen automatically for Leopard users. 4) From the NoteBook program, open the file Project Book.nb 5) A message will display that the file was created in an older version of NoteBook, select "Okay." 6) Once the processing is complete save the file, then, close it. Don't be confused or alarmed by the blank white page you see immediately after processing. 7) Re-open the file in NoteBook and all should work fine. It's really a very nice piece of work! Thomas ---

Hi, t-rex! Thanks for helping out. I downloaded both “Project Book” and “Top Secret” from the link and went through the procedures. But I still get 2 blank notebooks. Did I do anything wrong? Or can you e-mail me a copy of the file to blkcrow7@mac.com? Thanks again!

t-rex: Yes, I saved the file using “save as” to notebook’s directory and close the file then re-open it. But it was blank.

I”m having the same problem. Both notebook templates (Project Book and Top Secret) open up with white pages and nothing else. I have preformed all the steps mentioned above. I’m running on mac os 10.5.5 if that helps.

I’m running 10.4.11 on a 867MHz PowerPC G4, and I just successfully downloaded and opened the Project Book and Top Secret. I also just upgraded to Release 3.0 (v335), and read in the installation instructions about a possible cause for the failure of your conversion. IMPORTANT I’m not quite sure what the assistance is, other than someone that has converted the file successfully, passing it along to Leopard users. Frank

Sorry, I meant to get to this a lot earlier. As Frank points out, these files are very old Notebooks which have a problem when run under Leopard (they appear blank). The fix is to run them under Tiger and NoteBook (post v262) will update them. I’ve done that and attached Project Book as a zipped attachment here. I will attach Top Secret in my next post on this thread. Perhaps someone would like to contact the original hoster of these file so s/he can get the updated copies too. ---
