If you encounter problems with NoteBook 3.0, or have feature requests, please be sure to let us know about them using the support form. It is certainly OK to discuss issues and features here in the forums – just know that the support queue is the system we use to track them (in other words, if it’s not sent to support we may not know about it). We do respond to all support requests, and do as quickly as possible.

Update on NoteBook 3.0 (by Jayson)

Hello,

Well, to paraphrase a President, our long national nightmare appears to be over. Our website finally looks ready to support the 3.0 release, and we plan to ship NoteBook 3.0 very soon (as I’ve mentioned before, we don’t release new software on Fridays).

For anyone who wants to beat the rush, NoteBook 3.0 upgrades are available right now from our online store. You will need your 19-character NoteBook 2 license key – if you don’t have it handy you can use the auto-retrieval page to have it re-sent to you (if it’s registered with us). You won’t be able to download the software today, but you will have your 3.0 key when it does become available. This is just an option we’re making available today – there is no problem or downside to choosing to wait to purchase your upgrade key.

For those of you who purchased NoteBook 2.1 this year from our online store, your free upgrade key will be automatically added to your customer account. When NoteBook 3.0 becomes available there will be information on how to retrieve your 3.0 key (and purchases of NoteBook 2.1 between now and when we release NoteBook 3.0 will still upgrade for free).

For those of you who purchased the boxed edition of NoteBook 2.0 or 2.1 this year, you can receive a free 3.0 upgrade by following the instructions in the 3.0 upgrade form . Again, if you purchased NoteBook 2.1 from our online store, you will automatically receive your NoteBook 3.0 upgrade key – you do not need to and should not complete this form.

Best,

NoteBook 3.0 - Schedule Update #3 (by Jayson)

Hello,

Thank you to everyone patiently waiting for NoteBook 3.0. The good news is we are releasing the 3.0 software to manufacturing (disc duplication) tomorrow, September 2. One of the big features we had announced -- native support for tables -- won't be in the initial 3.0 release. We decided that it's better to ship 3.0 without tables and to include them in a near-term update than to see the software slip even more than it already has. We hope you agree this was the right decision.

The not-so-good news is the website is behind schedule, specifically the changes needed to support vending of 3.0 license keys and upgrading of 2.1 license keys. I should receive an update tomorrow (today being a holiday) on its status. I also want to mention that we restrict new software releases to certain days of the week. For example we never release new software on Fridays, so if the website were to come together by the end of this week we would be looking to launch 3.0 sometime next week.

The completion of the website work and launch window constraints makes it hard to declare when 3.0 will go live. To be safe I'm going to say it will happen within the next two weeks. It should not take two weeks to get the website ready, but stranger things have happened during this release cycle. Thank you again for your patience.

Best,

__jayson

Hello,

I mentioned in a previous post that we're working on bringing a new discussion forums online. In the new forums, the e-mail address associated with your current forums account will be your new login name, so it's important that you update your forums account to a current e-mail address. Please do this as soon as possible.

When the switchover takes place, your new account will have a random password assigned. When you request your password it will be sent to your e-mail address - another reason to have your e-mail address updated.

Best,

__jayson

Hello,

I promised 4 weeks ago to check in again and let you know how NoteBook 3.0 is coming along. Beta testing has been going well and we plan to ship NoteBook 3.0 at the end of August. Over the coming weeks we should be able to pin down an exact date, as well as provide information about obtaining your free NoteBook 3.0 upgrades (for those of you who purchased NoteBook 2.1 this year).

Lastly, we had hoped to have the new forums up by now but progress on that project has slipped. The new forums will go live either in the next two weeks, or at some point after 3.0 ships.

Best,

__jayson

Hello,

We had announced a ship date for NoteBook 3.0 of "second quarter 2008" — the second quarter ended yesterday, so we obviously missed that date. I know many of you are disappointed to not see NoteBook 3.0 on the downloads page. We've been working flat out since Macworld and are disappointed to not have it ready for you.

So what's behind the delay? Part is how software development projects tend to fall behind (a great example is Apple's 4-month delay in shipping Leopard). Part has nothing to do with writing software. For example, we decided it was important to upgrade some of our support systems here at Circus Ponies to coincide with the 3.0 release. We recently brought a new technical support tracking system online, which will allow us to maintain the same level of support you're used to as we add more and more customers. We've also been working on revamping the NoteBook Discussion Forums — more news about that in the coming weeks. These are important infrastructure improvements but they have taken time away from 3.0 development.

A best guess for a ship date for NoteBook 3.0 is 6 to 8 weeks from today. I will report back to you in 4 weeks to let you know how things are coming along. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We are all working hard for you.

Best,

Jayson Adams
President
Circus Ponies Software, Inc.

Hello all,

For the 100th MacVoices show, I was one of four Mac developers invited to participate in a round table discussion (the other three were John Nack, Photoshop Senior Product Manager at Adobe, Rich Siegel, founder of Bare Bones Software, and Paul Kafasis, co-founder of Rogue Amoeba Software). We talked about the state of software development today and our relationships, as developers, with Apple; the impact of the Internet and the iPod on our businesses; where the next killer app will come from; the long-term viability of the Macintosh platform; and more.

Best,

__jayson
